Our Secondary School Workshops

Re-Design

Duration: 2 hours
Venue: available at our place only
Capacity: up to 30 participants per session
Subjects: Technological and Applied Studies including Design and Technology, Industrial Technology, and Creative Arts including Visual Arts and Design

This is an open-ended design session where students reimagine a piece of industrial or commercial waste (past items have included cable spools, paper lanterns, and plastic bottles) into a new functional or artistic piece. This workshop emphasises design thinking skills and collaboration, students will work in small groups to plan their project, select materials, and build. Unlike other workshops where all the materials are provided, students are encouraged to visit the pick and mix area in the warehouse to select additional items they want to work with.

Sustainable Communities

Duration: 2 hours
Capacity: up to 30 students per session
Venue: available at our place or yours
Subjects: We can tailor a session to suit the context: education, art, sculpture, jewellery, millinery, upholstery and furniture, textiles, design, technology, education, interior design, drama or photography.

In this workshop students work together to design and build a model neighbourhood and consider what choices can be made regarding infrastructure, transportation, and lifestyle that would be sustainable and environmentally positive. The objective of this program is to focus on the ways in which whole communities make an environmental impact from the way they are built to the systems that support them. Students will work together to think through the choices that city planners, architects, and councils make when designing a community.

Trouble with Textiles

Duration: 1.5 hours
Capacity: up to 30 students per session
Venue: available at our place or yours
Subjects: Technological and Applied Studies including Design and Technology, Industrial Technology, and Creative Arts including Visual Arts and Design

In this workshop students will learn about the fast fashion crisis from a waste and materials perspective. After a summary of sustainability and discussion about key models, students will learn statistics about the types of materials that are used in the manufacturing of textiles as well as the production of polyester clothing. Students will then discuss possible actions that can be taken for a more sustainable future in textiles and be shown resources on how to keep up with information regarding textile waste. As a hands-on component, you can elect one of three options:

  1. Transforming discards into accessories
  2. The basics of hand mending textiles
  3. Weaving to explore how a textile is made
