Read on to discover more about Judith’s journey and what you can expect to take away from our new workshop Coil Basket Weaving Workshop — beyond your handmade basket!
What inspired you to start working with coil weaving and what do I love most about this technique?
I was interested to learn a creative technique that would allow me to work three-dimensionally and I love that it is simple, requires few tools and materials and it’s very portable.
What do you hope participants will take away from this workshop, beyond their handmade basket?
The workshop is an opportunity to learn a new creative skill, and ways of practising it sustainably. It is also a time spent connecting with others who may be interested in creativity and sustainability.
Whats your favourite part of the basket making process, and why?
I enjoy the simple action of repeated twisting and stitching as it is calming and meditative. I also love selecting the colours I will use in the piece.
How do you approach selecting materials for your own coiled baskets? Any tips for
participants on choosing fabrics?
I love colour and texture and natural fabrics, as well as raffia, which is a soft and pliable plant material obtained from the Madagascar palm. I suggest participants look for lightweight fabrics, as they will be easier to work with. They may also bring an old piece of clothing or other textile which could be cut up and repurposed.
Why do you think learning traditional crafts like coil weaving is important in today’s world?
I believe practising traditional crafts encourages creativity and can enhance mental well-being as well as social connection. They are often a focus for people to create together, as well as to share ideas and connect. Traditional crafts are a way to be creative in a sustainable way as they can often be practised using pre-loved materials.
